Wedged between other larger European countries, Luxembourg definitely shouldn’t be overlooked for everything it has to offer. With picturesque streets, gorgeous scenery and a fascinating history, this is a truly unique nation.
While studying abroad in Paris, my friends and I decided to visit Luxembourg over a long weekend. It turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences during our whole stay in Europe! We wanted to spend more time there, but the country is definitely small enough to experience within a few days.
Spending a weekend in Luxembourg? Here are the top things you must do!
Begin at Place d’Armes
With plenty of bars and restaurants, Place d’Armes is a charming square and the perfect place to begin your journey. Grab a bite to eat and people watch, soaking in the local atmosphere. There are also a number of stalls great for thrift shoppers.
Explore Place Guillaume II
Right next to Place d’Armes is neighboring Place Guillaume II. On a warm day, take a stroll around and marvel at the adorable shops offering plenty of flowers and souvenirs. If you still have room in your stomach, be sure to try out some local food!
Roam Luxembourg City’s Historic Center
Luxembourg’s old quarters are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Due to its location, the country has a fascinating story. History buffs will rejoice at the rich history of this small nation.
Visit Luxembourg’s famous Vianden Castle
The highlight of our weekend in Luxembourg was definitely visiting Vianden Castle! Dating back to the 11th century, this castle is breathtakingly gorgeous and something out of a fairy tale, sitting atop a hill overlooking the surrounding landscape. Since it’s not swarming with tourists like Neuschwanstein Castle or other similar properties across Europe, you can climb around the structures and enjoy certain rooms by yourself!
Getting there: catch the train from Luxembourg City to Ettelbruck station, then bus 570 to Vianden. The journey takes around 1-1.5 hours. You can then either take the chairlift or walk up the hilly streets to the castle!
Castle admission fee: 6 euros per adult.
Explore Luxembourg’s forests
More than a third of Luxembourg is covered with trees and vast forests. With diverse plants and pristine wilderness, Luxembourg attracts numerous nature-lovers from around the world. What’s even better: due to the size of the country, you don’t need to go far to explore and get lost in nature!
Go hiking in Luxembourg
For such a small country, there are a surprising number of trails. From family-friendly paths to more strenuous hikes, Luxembourg offers a variety of different experiences for all travelers. True hiking aficionados can’t miss the Mullerthal Trail, which passes through what’s known as Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland!
Try the local Luxembourgish cuisine
Lastly, food in Luxembourg reflects its farming heritage, along with its geographical state sandwiched between France, Belgium, and Germany. Think of German and French influences, and hearty food with lots of meat, potatoes, cream and wine. Yum!
